Here at Powertrain Products Inc we take pride in not only building the best 4.6 engines but also on improving them. Although the 4.6 is arguably one of ford's best designs in the last 20 years it; like many other engines was plagued with flaws. Whenever we remanufacture one of these engines there are a number of product improvements that are done to insure we supply the best 4.6 engine possible.
Spark Plug Failures
One of the most commonly asked about issues is the spark plug failures these suffer. It is common on these engine to have a spark plug eject from the engine under normal operation. Many times after a recent tune up. The cause of this was due to the lack of ford installing the proper amount of threads in the 4.6 aluminum heads. We remedy this on all our 4.6 engines by drilling, re-welding, drilling again & finally re-threading in not only new but more threads into our heads. This improves the torque ability of the spark plugs and prevents any failure for years to come. All this coupled with the installation of timing covers and oil pans allows us to product the quality of engine that you deserve and that we can stand behind with our strong powertrain 4 year 1milliion mile parts & labor warranty.
Another issue very commonly caused by the remanufacturers of 4.6 engines is the decking of the block. These engines run a very tight compression ratio as it pertains to the ability to create detonation. Many other remanufacturers will deck a block deep until it is cleaned up. This provides a perfect mating surface but increases compression so far that the engine detonates and fails. then the warranty report from the manufacturers is that you have a fuel system issue and your claim gets denied. We only deck our blocks a maximum of 5 thousandths of an inch. This provides a clean surface while still preventing the problems noted above. In the event we have a core that needs to be decked further it is thrown out for scrap. One of the other problems this prevents is emission te4st failures. Blocks that are decked to far fall below many stats emissions standards and will fail the test. Our blocks are 50 state emissions legal certified.
Block Repairs?? We Don't
Our Ford 4.6 engines are 100% free of repairs while manufactured. This means we do not weld or helicoil any blocks if we cannot provide the block to you without a repair it is scrapped and we move onto the next one. This means less chance for failure down the road.
C & C Machining ?? Yes we do that
All of our ford 4.6 engines are bored on a C&C machine. This provides a PERFECT surface for pistons to seat in on and gives better then OEM longevity out of the blocks. We also CNC machine and polish all of our ford 4.6 crankshafts. This provides a perfect NEW surface for the bearings to seat on and eliminates oil pressure issues and premature wear.
Cylinder Heads on our ford 4.6 engines are basically all new. The castings are reclaimed and remanufactured but aside from that we install all new parts valves,seats, guides all new to prevent any problems. Most manufacturers cut corners here and reclaim parts but we have found this to be a problem point on the ford 4.6 engine so we do not.
Many other issues addressed are improvements in piston design by using graphite coated side skirts on our pistons to cut down on premature cylinder bore wear. Timing innovations by the way of new timing guides and tensioners to prevent that dreaded slap leading to wear and finally failure. We use MLS (multi layer steel) head gaskets on all our engine to prevent head gasket failure over time.
