All You Need To Know About The GM 6T75E Transmission

The 6T75E is a 6-speed automatic transmission designed by General Motors and released in 2007. Read on to discover all you need to know about this transmission, from everyday issues to replacement costs and everything in between.

What Vehicles Are Compatible With The GM 6T75E?

GM and Ford jointly developed this transmission, and both companies have named them differently. The GM units are called 6T75E and have been predominantly used in vehicles with the 3.6-liter V6 produced from 2007 on. Ford called its unit the 6F55. Some popular GM vehicles that have used this transmission include:

What Are the Common Issues With The 6T75E?

The 6T75E is a reliable unit overall, but it has a few known issues. Design faults cause some, while others can be attributed to normal wear and tear. Common issues include:

  • Slipping Between Gears
  • Delayed and/or Gear Engagement
  • Stalling

These common issues can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Solenoid Failure
  • Torque Converter Issues
  • Planetary Gear Slippage

At Powertrain Products, we work to correct all known factory faults, ensuring that you get a better-than-OE product.

What’s The Difference Between The 6T75E And 6T70 Transmissions?

These two transmissions are closely related and share a similar design. The 6T75E features detail improvements and a different valve body design over the 6T70 which allows it to handle slightly higher power outputs. Both are 6-speed units intended for use in transverse engine applications, but they are not interchangeable.

How Does The 6T75E Handle Towing Or Heavy Use?

The 6T75E is a capable transmission well-suited for towing and heavy-duty use. Prolonged towing will put extra strain on the drivetrain, including the transmission, so ensure that you stick to your transmission’s maintenance intervals.

If your vehicle is equipped with a tow or haul mode, make sure to use it. Never tow more than the manufacturer’s recommendations, which can lead to overheating and premature component failure.

Did GM Fix The 6T75E Wave Plate Problem?

Owners of certain GM models equipped with the 6T70 and 6T75E transmissions built between 2007-2009 may have heard of the wave plate issue. This component sits between the clutch packs and helps with keeping the gears locked in place.

The wave plates used for 3rd, 5th, and reverse on some earlier transmissions were known to break, which would cause severe internal damage. The issue was widespread enough for GM to issue special coverage for this fault until August 2017. The vehicles covered included the GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, Chevy Malibu, and Pontiac G6.

While this coverage has long since expired, Powertrain Products rectifies all known factory faults when it remanufactures your 6T75E transmission. It offers a standard 3-year warranty, which can be extended for up to 7 years and a million miles. (If you’re using this transmission for a 1-ton and up application, our 18 month, 50k mile standard Commercial Warranty will be applied to your purchase instead.)

How Much Does A GM 6T75E Transmission Cost?

A remanufactured Powertrain Products 6T75E transmission typically costs under $4k. This includes our standard 3-year warranty and the core charge waiver which is applied for your old transmission core.

We offer a complete range of GM 6T75E transmissions to fit a wide range of vehicles. Each remanufactured transmission meets or exceeds the manufacturer’s original specifications.

Will A Replacement 6T75E Transmission Come With A Warranty?

With all our remanufactured transmissions, we offer a range of other warranty options in addition to the standard 3-year warranty. Opting for one of our upgraded warranties gives you additional peace of mind – after all, a transmission is a big investment!

Can I Replace A GM 6T75E Transmission Myself?

Replacing any transmission requires advanced mechanical know-how and specialized tools and equipment. You should not attempt this job if you are not a skilled mechanic, as improper installation can result in expensive damage to the transmission and other components. Some of the heavy-duty tools needed to swap out your GM 6T75E transmission include:

  • A car lift (jack stands may not provide enough clearance)
  • Torque wrench, socket set, breaker bar, pry bar, and tube wrench
  • Specialized transmission removal tools

Where Should I Buy A GM 6T75E Transmission?

At Powertrain Products we put our transmissions through a rigorous rebuilding process that includes rectifying known factory faults to make them better than new.

For every remanufactured transmission, we have an available industry-leading warranty of up to 7 years or 1 million miles.

Keep in mind that our remanufactured transmissions are not intended for use on trucks with modified emissions systems, deleted emissions systems, or tuned vehicles. We do offer upgraded units for that purpose (contact us for more info) however, the warranty that comes with our stock units will be voided if used in this manner.

We can offer such extensive coverage because each transmission goes through a meticulous remanufacturing process, including:

  • Teardown and Triple Cleaning – Each transmission is completely disassembled, thoroughly inspected, and cleaned three times. We also chase every thread and install brand-new bushings throughout.
  • Valve Body Rebuild & Testing – Our most seasoned technicians rebuild and inspect every valve body, then test it using our C.A.R.S. system, which simulates real-world conditions to ensure optimal performance.
  • New Seals, Gaskets and O-Rings – After testing the valve body, we reassemble the transmission using all new seals, gaskets, and O-rings to ensure a reliable, leak-free seal.
  • Dyno Testing – Using custom-built dynamometers, we spin and load-test each unit to guarantee it’s fully road-ready.

When you purchase a remanufactured transmission from Powertrain Products, you get a unit that meets or surpasses OEM standards.
