Engine Problems Explained: Hydrolock
Hydrolock, or hydraulic lock, is a serious problem that can occur in engines. It happens when water enters the engine cylinders, preventing the pistons from moving. This can cause significant damage and is something every vehicle owner should be aware of.
In this post, we’ll share a video that explains hydrolock, how it happens, the damage caused by it, and how to fix it.
What is Hydrolock?
Hydrolock occurs when a liquid, usually water, enters the engine cylinders. Engines are designed to compress air and fuel, but when a denser liquid like water gets into the cylinder, it causes the engine to stop suddenly, potentially leading to severe internal damage.
There are several reasons why hydrolock can happen:
- Driving through deep water or flooding.
- Cooling system leaks allowing coolant to enter the cylinders.
- Fuel system issues that introduce liquid fuel into the cylinders.
In the case of the 4.6-liter V8 in the video above, the hydrolock occurred because too much gas entered the cylinder head, causing the engine to stop.
Damage Caused by Hydrolock
When hydrolock occurs, it can cause extensive damage to the engine, including:
- Bent or broken connecting rods.
- Damaged pistons and crankshaft.
- Warped cylinder heads and engine block.
At best, the damaged parts can be replaced, and the engine can be rebuilt. However, in severe cases, the engine may be irreparable and require complete replacement.
Preventing And Fixing Hydrolock
The best way to prevent hydrolock is to avoid driving into deep puddles or water. Or, in cases where the hydrolock was caused by fuel or coolant issues, the best thing to prevent issues is to accurately diagnose the problem before it harms your engine.
If your engine suffers hydrolock, often the best option is to replace it with a quality remanufactured engine, like the ones we offer at PPI. In many cases, a replacement engine will cost less than the repairs and comes with a warranty for peace of mind.
