If you own a 4.6L or 5.4L Ford modular engine, you may need to find the engine code in addition to the VIN to order a reman engine. For these engines, the VIN doesn’t always provide all the information needed about the engine. It’s pretty easy to find the engine code for a Ford modular engine. We’ll show you how.

What Is An Engine Code?

A Ford engine code is a string of seven characters. It contains two letters, three numbers, and then two letters at the end. It’ll tell you a lot about your engine, such as:

• The month and year of production
• The model year
• The change level number
• The cubic inch displacement (CID)

In some Ford VINs, there’s a digit that represents the engine code. But this does not always tell the full story. Often, especially in the case of modular 4.6 & 5.4 engines, the engine code from the valve cover is needed. You’ll need to pop the hood.
