Are The Engines You Sell Complete?

One of the most common questions people ask us is, “Are the engines you sell complete?”

In fact, we get this question often. We decided to dedicate a blog post to answering it as thoroughly as possible.

The short answer is yes. The long answer? It depends on how you define a complete engine. There are two general – but very different – definitions for the term “complete”:

  1. A drop-in engine that’s ready to run after you add oil
  2. A long block that’s mostly complete, but it still needs some parts like:
    1. Oil pans
    2. Fuel system components, such as injectors
    3. Accessories, such as the alternator or water pump

In both cases, the answer is yes. We sell complete engines. We have drop-in engines and complete long block engines.

What Is A Complete Long Block Engine?

replacement engines

A complete long block engine is a common term in the automotive parts industry. It means a remanufactured engine that has the following components already installed:

  • Heads
  • Gaskets
  • Oil pump

In most cases, external parts are cleaned and re-used. Such external parts include:

  • Oil pan
  • Timing cover
  • Valve covers
  • Intake manifold
  • Starter

Many of the engines we stock come with the oil pan and the timing cover on and ready to go.

Should I Get A Short Block Engine Instead?

You may have noticed that short block engines are generally cheaper than complete long block engines. If you’re looking for a complete engine, don’t buy a short block engine. If you buy a short block engine, you’ll need to either put in some work or pay some labor costs.

Short block engines come without cylinder heads. That means you would need to install cylinder heads on your short block engine. Whether you’re pulling the heads off an old engine or buying new heads, it’s going to either take some time, or cost some money. After all that work, there’s still no guarantee that the engine will run smoothly. It’s always better to get a complete engine that’s built by professionals.
