Our Best Selling Transfer Cases

Transfer cases are a very popular product here at Powertrain Products. They are a part of your vehicle’s drivetrain and are responsible for transferring power between the front and rear axles.

We sell a wide range of transfer cases. Read on to learn more about some of our most popular ones, their inherent faults, and how we deal with them when they are rebuilt.

What Is A Transfer Case?

A transfer case is found in four-wheel-drive (4WD) and some all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles. It distributes power from the transmission to the front and rear axles through drive shafts. Depending on the vehicle, it allows you engage the AWD system to improve traction or disengage it to improve fuel economy.

Some transfer cases also have high and low-range settings. This changes the gearing to allow for better rock crawling and off-roading ability. Some are manually adjusted, while others are electronically controlled. Either by the driver or an ECU when it senses a change in traction levels.

The Most Common Transfer Cases at Powertrain Products

We sell many different types of transfer cases. Below are some of our most popular ones and information on how we address any known issues.

Transfer Cases For GM Models

These three GM transfer cases tend to develop the same issues over time. They are made from magnesium, which tends to result in accelerated wear as they age. As fluid starts to leak out, the internal components overheat and eventually fail.

Another common issue with these transfer cases is ‘pump rub’, which results in small pinholes developing in the transfer case. This also leads to fluid loss and eventual component failure. To combat this, Powertrain Products uses a pump saver in these transfer cases, eliminating the issue.

This is a manual shifting transfer case that uses a viscous coupler. GM says that the coupler is not a serviceable item. The transfer case itself can be repaired or refurbished. However, it also usually means that we have to replace the coupler during the rebuild process.

This is an electric shifting transfer case found on several GM models built between 2003 and 2006. This includes the Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Suburban 1500, and GMC Yukon.

Transfer Cases For Dodge Models

These two are our most commonly sold Dodge transfer case models. Vehicles with these cases tended to have defective driveshafts from the factory. Models affected include the 2006-2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500.

U-joints tend to fail prematurely, causing the transfer case to actually explode. As part of our warranty for these transfer cases, the driveshaft has to be replaced at the same time. Failure to do so can damage the remanufactured transfer case. Check out the video below to see why we recommend driveshaft replacement:
