Don’t Replace Your Dodge Engine Until You Read This!
Let’s get straight to the chase. It’s simple; if you buy a Dodge 2.7, 3.7, 4.7, or 5.7-liter from Powertrain Products, you must replace the intake manifold for our warranty to be valid.
It may sound odd, but we have a perfectly good reason for this. Read on to find out why.
What’s With The .7 motors?
Dodge .7 engines can be found in anything from Jeep Grand Cherokees, Dodge Rams, Durangos, and Dakotas, to name just a few.
They offer decent power and fuel economy for their size. But when these technically advanced .7 engines were introduced in 1997, some common issues started cropping up. The specific ones we address here relate to the valve seats and intake manifolds.
The cylinder heads on all .7 engines are cast in aluminum. The valve seats are made from powdered metal. When the engine gets hot, they expand at a different rate to each other. This can result in the valve seats coming loose and literally dropping into the cylinder. This is especially likely if the engine were run on the edge of overheating or actually overheated.
When the valve seat drops, it gets violently crushed by the piston. Little chunks of metal imbed themselves into the piston. The engine may keep running, but that cylinder will no longer have compression, so the engine will be down on power. A check engine light will probably come on. Engines affected by this issue are the 1997-on:
- 2.7-liter
- 3.7-liter
- 4.7-liter
- 5.7-liter (Hemi and standard)
So Why Replace The Manifold?
You may wonder what all this has to do with the intake manifold. Well, the manifold intake runners have a complex inverted U shape. When the valve seat gets crushed, little chunks of metal fly into the intake manifold and sit there. As the engine won’t run well, not much air moves through that might blow them out. Due to the shape of the runners, the chunks are difficult to remove. Even if you put a lot of work into it, you can’t be sure you got them all.
If you put the old manifold on a new reman engine, the next time you get to accelerate hard, the increased airflow will suck the chunks into the engine. The resultant cylinder head and piston damage will need another rebuild.
Think This Won’t Happen To You?
If you are still in doubt, then take a look at our video review above of an ‘at install failure’ of a freshly rebuilt Dodge 4.7-liter engine. The piston and cylinder head were badly damaged by these small metal fragments that had been stuck in the old intake.
The rest of the motor still looked brand new. That’s because it had literally done almost no miles! This is why we insist that you install a new manifold in order to get a warranty on your new engine.
